Fire chiefs issue warning to anyone with washing machine in kitchen plug sockets - The Mirror US

Jun 07, 2025

Fire chiefs sounded the alarm for homeowners with washing machines in their kitchens, cautioning against plugging them into double plug sockets.

Many U.K. homes typically have a washing machine in the kitchen due to space constraints, and modern homes are often equipped with convenient double plug sockets throughout the kitchen area.

These sockets accommodate a variety of appliances, from air fryers to slow cookers and even provide a spot to charge your phone while you're busy in the kitchen.

However, the Fire Industry Association in the U.K., which collaborates with fire brigades and services nationwide on fire safety, warns of the dangers associated with washing machines.

It stresses the importance of safety measures, including the recommendation to always use a single plug socket for your washing machine rather than a double or shared one.

The reason behind this advice is that a double plug socket doesn't offer twice the power capacity of a single socket (20A vs 13A), posing a risk of fire if overloaded with multiple high-energy appliances simultaneously, the Express reported.

Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service advises: "High powered appliances such as washing machines should have a single plug socket."

"Never use square box plug adapters, and if using a strip adapter/extension make sure it's fused and don't overload it."

The Fire Industry Association issued a stark warning about the dangers of electrical fires, particularly those involving white goods, which have seen over 1,100 incidents in 2024. They've called for households to exercise increased vigilance.

It stated: "Electrical fires remain a major concern across the U.K. In 2024 alone, 1,140 accidental electrical fires involving white goods were recorded in England — that's three fires every day. By understanding potential hazards and following essential safety measures, homeowners can significantly reduce the risk of electrical fires.

"White goods, such as washing machines and tumble dryers, require regular checks to ensure they are safe for use.

"Never leave washing machines, tumble dryers, or dishwashers running overnight or unattended.

"Ensure appliances are well-ventilated and installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.

"Register new appliances to receive safety alerts about recalls.

"Check plugs and sockets for scorch marks, buzzing noises, or loose connections.

"Only buy electrical appliances from reputable retailers — avoid counterfeit or untested products."

Additionally, it advises: "Try to keep to one plug per socket, especially for high-powered appliances like washing machines.

"If using a cable drum extension lead, it should be completely unwound to avoid overheating."
